Mercy Basketball

With the end of school just around the corner, here is some information regarding our summer basketball program. Our schedule (practices and games) for June can be found on the practice link, on the right-hand side of this page under pages. Our format will be similar to past years in that players will divided into two groups: seniors/juniors (and some selected younger players) in one group, 12th/11th; and sophomores/ (incoming) freshmen in the other, (10th/9th). The older group will go for two weeks in June and the younger group will go for three weeks in June. Both groups will then come back on July 12, with the younger group then going for two weeks and the older group going for three weeks.

Both groups will play some games during the summer and both groups will go to team camp in Gaylord. The 10th/9th group will go July 18-21, and the 12th/11th group will go July 25-28. Team camp will by invitation. There will be a fee to play in summer games to cover entry and referee costs, as well as the team camp. More info will be coming regarding fees. For the team camps, we have reserved some extra hotel rooms, and will need some parents to volunteer to drive and chaperone.

The July schedule (practices/games) will be posted shortly, but our game schedule is pretty well set. The 12th/11th group will play games July 14-15, 20-22, and team camp (July 25-28). The 10th/9th group will play games July 1, 14-15, and team camp (July 18-21).

Lastly, for our incoming freshmen, there are still spots open for our individual camp, June 21-24 (1:00-4:00). Please go to the individual camp link on the right-hand side of this page for information, including a registration form.

Mercy will host an individual basketball camp from June 21-24. 5th-7th graders go from 9am-Noon, and 8th-9th graders from 1:00-4:00. You can download a camp brochure by going to links; then click on individual camp.

The Varsity team earned Team All-Academic Honorable Mention honors from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, with a team GPA of 3.596. Way to go ladies!!

• We are putting the game schedule together for next season and are contemplating playing in a tournament on December 28-29, as scheduling becomes tougher each year.
• This would be a change from previous years when we just had a scrimmage between Christmas and New Year’s day. If we opt for the tournament, we’d have to make some adjustments to our CYO tournament. Our last game before Christmas is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 16 and our first game after the break is Jan.4. All 3 teams will take sometime off before and after Christmas, but we will all practice during the break.

Here is some tentative information regarding summer basketball:

• We will be divided into two groups: “Vars” (12th/11th/some 10th and some incoming 9th) and “JV” (10th/incoming 9th). Both groups will begin on Monday, June 14…V: 5:00-7:00, JV:7:00-9:00.
• Both groups will practice TU-TH of that week (times TBD)
• Both groups will practice/play games the week of June 21
• The JV group will practice/play games the week of June 28
• Both groups will practice/play games the week of July 12 and the week of July 19
• The V group will practice/play games the week of July 26
• The JV group will play games on June 18-19-23-24-26-30-July 1-14-15, and will go to the Gaylord team camp (by invitation) July 18-21(play games July 19-21)
• The V group will play games on June 18-19-23-24-26-July 14-15-20-21-22, and will go to the Gaylord team camp (by invitation) July 25-28 (play games July 26-28)
• There will be an individual camp for incoming 9th graders, June 21-24…please go to the individual camp link for a brochure

Several members of the Varsity team earned various honors. In the Catholic League, Abbey Lovat was selected All-League; Diana Jasser earned All-Academic; and Janelle McQueen and Elena Vlachos made All League Honrable Mention. Janelle McQueen was chosen Observer All-Area 4th team; while Elena Vlachos and Abbey Lovat earned Honorable Mention. Congratulations!!

A big thank you to Nick Pudar for all his terrific pictures of the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams throughout the season.

The basketball program had its end-of-the-season banquet on March 14. Thanks to Sr. Regina, Mrs Witte and Mrs Malinowski for being a part of it. A big thank you to all who were on the banquet committee for putting together such a special night. Thanks to Dominique Mosby for her senior message and to her parents for their stirring senior parent reflections. Thanks to all players, parents and coaches who attended, and for all your contributions to Mercy basketball this season. The Varsity coaches recognized the follwing players for honors: Rookie of the Year - Sarah Benson; Most Improved Player - Elena Vlachos; Larry Baker Coaches Award - Alexa Bahoura, Diana Jasser, and Jessie Ronayne.
