Mercy Basketball

The Varsity team will begin district play this week. All games are at West Bloomfield H.S. We drew a bye for the first night of games, which is tonight. We will play on Wednesday, March 3, at 5:30, versus the winner of the West Bloomfield-North Farmington game. The other side of the bracket is W.L. Western- Farmington tonight, with F.H. Harrison playing the winner on Wednesday, at 7:00. The district final is Friday, March 5, at 7:00. Let’s please get a loud cheering section there for our team.

Practice time change for Tuesday. We will practice from 5:00-7:00, due to some players having some after school activities.

Th Varsity Marlins ended the regular season with a 43-24 home win versus Shrine. The team played solid defense throughout the game and our shooting improved as the game went on. Kirstie Racinski led the scoring with 12 points and Lauren Reinhold added 11. Janelle McQueen tallied 7 points, while Elena Vlachos had 6 points. Jessie Ronayne, Sarah Benson and Alexa Bahoura each added 2 points. LaRae’ Prater had 1 point, and Diana Jasser and Hannah Pichner also contributed to the victory. No other stats were available, as of this write-up. With the win, the team finishes the regular season at 11-9, and now prepares for district play.

The Varsity team came out strong and never looked back in defeating Detroit Communication and Media Arts 51-19. Janelle McQueen kept up her good play of late and paced the Marlins with 14 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. LaRae’ Prater played well contributing 8 points and 7 rebounds. Lauren Reinhold added 6 points and 4 steals, while Elena Vlachos had 5 points and 3 steals. Abbey Lovat tallied 5 points and 4 assists, Jessie Ronayne had 4 points and 2 steals, Alexa Bahoura chipped in with 4 points and 3 boards, Kirstie Racinski had 3 points and 3 rebounds, Diana Jasser had 2 points and 2 rebounds, Sarah Benson had 6 rebounds, Hannah Pichner added 1 rebound, Michaela Mazur had 2 rebounds and Elaina Weber also had 2 boards. The team will play its last regular season game on Thursday, at home versus Shrine, at 6:00.

Both the Freshman (vs Bishop Foley) and Junior Varsity (vs Notre Dame Prep) teams won their semi-final games. As a result, both teams advance to the Catholic League championship games on Friday, February 19. The games will be played at Ladywood, with the Freshman playing at 5:30, and the JV playing at 7:00. Please come out and cheer on our Marlins.

The Varsity team got back to .500 (9-9) on the season with a home win over Academy of the Sacred Heart 47-30. All 11 players got into the scoring column. Janelle McQueen had 8 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, while Diana Jasser started and also tallied 8 points. Sarah Benson added 7 points and 4 rebounds, Jessie Ronayne started and scored 6 points, along with 2 assists and 2 steals, and Lauren Reinhold chipped in with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Elena Vlachos (2 points, 3 boards), Abbey Lovat (2 points, 6 rebounds), Hannah Pichner (started, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Kirstie Racinski (2 points, 3 rebounds), LaRae’ Prater (2 points, 5 boards) and Alexa Bahoura (2 points, 3 rebounds) also contributed to the win. The team next plays on Tuesday at home, versus Detroit Communication and Media Arts, at 6:00.

The Varsity team staged a furious fourth quarter rally to win at Birmingham Groves 52-51. Janelle McQueen led the way with 19 points (18 in the 2nd half) and 4 steals. Elena Vlachos added 9 points and 5 rebounds, while Abbey Lovat tallied 6 points (including the deciding free throws with 17 seconds left) and 3 steals. Kirstie Racinski chipped in with 5 points and 8 assists, Alexa Bahoura had 4 points and 3 rebounds, and LaRae’ Prater added 2 points and 8 rebounds. All six of these players played very good defense in the second half to spark the comeback.

It is expected that players from all three of our teams will attend the Catholic League Finals on Sunday, February, 21. The games will be at 1:00 (O.L. Lakes vs Cardinal Mooney) and 3:00 (Marian vs Ladywood). The bus will leave Mercy at 12:30 and each player will be given an admission ticket. This is the showcase event of our league, we need to support it,  and some of our players will receive recognition.
